The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey adalah prequel dari trilogi The Lord of the Rings yang juga disutradarai oleh Peter Jackson. Seperti halnya trilogi The Lord of the Rings, film ini pun diangkat dari novel yang berjudul sama karangan J.R.R. Tolkien.
Film ini rilis serentak di bioskop-bioskop seluruh dunia yang juga di Indonesia pada tanggal 18 Desember 2012, dan langsung bertengger di posisi pertama Chart Box Office di Amerika sana dan bertahan menjadi jawara box office perolehan dollar tertinggi selama beberapa minggu penanyangannya.
Dalam film ini hadir sekilas bintang utama trilogi The Lord of the Rings yaitu Elijah Wood. Sedangkan alur cerita berkisah seputar petualangan hobbit bernama Bilbo Baggins yang ditemani Thorin Oakenshield dan 12 kurcaci.Mereka melakukan perjalanan menuju Gunung Sunyi untuk merebut kembali harta yang hilang dicuri Naga Smaug.di sini juga diceritakan bagaimana Bilbo dan Gandalf memulai persahabatan mereka, dan bagaimana Ia bertemu dengan Gollum yang mana merupakan awal dari bencana besar di Middle Earth karena di sinilah Ia "mencuri" cincin(The ring of power) dari Gollum.
